Schools back

Well, summer got the better of me.  I didn't sew much at all, and what I did sew was very slow going.   We've been back in school now for a couple weeks and I have time again!  I'm having a hard time staying focused on one project...a little of this and a little of that.
First up, Shimmer.  (Pattern found here.)  I love picking fabrics to put together in these blocks, and they go together quickly.
I couldn't resist April Rhodes new fabric line, Observer, and thought it worked really well with this HUGE block, it's 36 inches.  Pattern is from the Moda Building Blocks quilt booklet.  I don't want to make the entire quilt, but I need to figure out how to make it bigger.  I'm a little stumped on this one, so I put it away for a bit.  Maybe some inspiration will  strike.
And lastly I've been trying to use up scraps.  The never ending love/hate relationship I  have with scraps.  There are just so many of them, and they never run out.  I can't decide if I should arrange this pattern horizontally or vertically.
Actually, lastly, I'm wondering if anyone has a favorite charity they donate quilts to.  I would love to a place that takes quilt tops too.  Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

  1. The scrap quilt looks very good, I think I like the vertical version best.

  2. Vertical! I donate baby quilts and homemade taggies to my local hospital's NICU for DCFS cases.

  3. Quilts From the Heart in Washington state is a non profit public benefit organization that supports over 20 different charities all over the Puget Sound area. They take any and all sizes of quilt tops and turn them into gorgeous works of art to provide comfort to people in shelters for the homeless, victims of domestic abuse, families in transition, women recovering from substance abuse, and others. Check them out at www.quiltsfromtheheart.org. They are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation so the value of your donated quilt tops is tax deductible.

  4. I think I like that scrap quilt vertical best. Very cool quilt! I run a charity called Covered in Love that gives quilts to the families of patients who die in the hospital. We are a smaller charity, not 501c3 yet. We gladly take tops!

  5. I volunteer with AZ Blankets 4 Kids. It is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) that provides handmade comfort blankets to seriously ill and traumatized kids in the Phoenix Metro area. They accept tops.

  8. I'm so happy you are "back", after almost 4 months! Your blog is quite inspiring to me.
I would definitely go with the vertical, for some reason I cannot explain, the solids read nicer in the vertical version. Cheers from Argentina
