star wars

made for my Star Wars loving(or should I say obsessed!) five year old, he asked and I delivered.  I'm not usually into the character fabrics, but I had to do it for him.  He knows the name of characters from Star Wars I had no idea existed...I know some of you know what I am talking about.  Seriously...it's like a cult following for little boys.

I made it to fit on his bed, hoping he'd stay in bed at night, and it worked for about one night...

We've got millenium falcons and xwings...

He was so excited for this...until he saw the finished top and said, Mom, I like it, but I thought it would have more star wars on it...so I repented and purchased this fabric, that is truly an abomination, and put it on the back.  He was happy--actually would prefer to have it backwards on his bed.

  1. Evidence of a Mother's love! Better not let my boys see this...they'll be wanting one and my quilting skills are not up to it! Looks fantastic - well done! Rachel x

  2. You are one sweet mama! I think it is fantastic that you made it the way he wanted. It's cute & meaningful! Just what a quilt should be!

  3. Years from now, you might be surprised how much he'll still love this quilt. (And you'll be glad you splurged on the abomination backing.) My little boy is a high school senior and he refuses to take a Santa quilt off his bed. That quilt has been on his bed since he was four. He has bigger quilts, but none keep him as "warm" as that Santa apparently. :)

  4. That made me smile so big. I don't know how many times I've tried to please a child but still wanting to make it cute for ME!!! I was thinking it was brilliant the way you incorporated the not so fab, fab.
    I love it!

  5. He'll have that quilt forever, and the zigzag side will show more often as he gets older and wants to show people his "grown-up" side, but I wouldn't be surprised if it goes off to college with him either!

It's really cute, and while you may detest the print on the back, it made him over the moon happy, and you can't argue with that. :-)

  6. I really love it. And I think if you have to buy character fabric (I know I will someday as my kids are 1 and 3) that Star Wars is pretty cool.

  11. You are such a sweet mom. I love how you balanced the star wars fabric with a great design. What a lucky little guy. I guess I'll have to give in to the Spider Man obsession after all....

  15. Ha Ha!! My kindergartener is also completely obsessed with Star Wars. I made him a pillowcase with fabric that would qualify as an "abomination" as well. He of course loves it!! You are very dedicated to make the whole quilt. He will love it forever I'm sure.

  16. This is awesome. Perfect way to use the Star Wars fabric! Although I know my kids would want more too-- they are all nuts about weird novelty fabrics and that just about kills me. I made Cooper pj pants out of the backing fabric you used and they are so horrific, but he LOVES them. It just felt so weird to buy the fabric.

  17. What a great mom! I'm not big into licensed stuff either, but this is a wonderful compromise. You did an awesome job!

  20. you are seriously the coolest mom ever to have done that!! my boys would all have loved that at one time or another and i have one now that would still love it!! (he's 7) it's so cute. i've looked at those fabrics at joann's thinking how i could do something really cool like that, but it's so tough getting everything done. good for you for fitting it in and making one super happy boy and what a fun keepsake! love it! ;)

  22. I had to comment on this one because of the coincidence involved. When my daughter turned 5 I used your zig zag tutorial to make her a Mendocino quilt. Now I am making my son's 5-yr-old quilt (he's actually almost 7 but whatever) and I'm making him a Star Wars quilt but making different stars. So, the two quilts are connected. :) And you convinced me to buck up and just buy the Star Wars fabric for the backing and he was thrilled! Thanks for sharing Nettie, you made me smile.
