wagon wheels

I finished up my spiderweb quilt, and definitely think it looks a lot more like wagon wheels than spiderwebs.
It measures 40in X 40in.

I used the tutorial found here, with some slight modifications...It's made up of 16 blocks, but I didn't 'spiderweb' each block all the way. I wanted the wagon wheels to all be complete, so I omitted some of the piecing, I also didn't paper piece (not a fan of picking off the paper--I guess I am lazy, I would rather be doing something else).

One of my all time favorite prints on the back, happy campers by heather ross.

I didn't expect to love the binding as much as I do, but I found this really great red polka dot, and I think it just makes the quilt!

I'm nearly 31 weeks, and this will definitely be for our baby girl who's due to come in October.

  1. This is one of the prettiest, vibrant and ingenious/novel baby quilts I've ever seen. I hope I get to make one and it turns out just as beautifully

  5. The quilt is super darling. I love it. I want it! Be careful I don't come to steal it. I love string quilts and I like that you adapted it to suit you with no paper piecing. Hate that myself. I love the colors and the fabrics. I always think a baby quilt is really a fashion accessory for the mom and baby both.

  18. Yay for October babies... congrats! It's a beautiful quilt! What fabric do you use for large areas of white/cream in your quilts? I'm new at this and very nervous about selecting a light color that will be too thin. Do you have a go to, or do you just pick any random white cotton at the shop? Thanks for any advice you can give me.

  21. Great baby quilt - expecially with that Heather Ross on the back. (I still could not use my vans that way, I saw this first on flickr.) How did you piece it without the paper?

  23. mandy, the binding is called "bees knees" by glenna hailey for maywood studios. I found it at a local shop while i was on vacation.

calico cat, using the template for the solid center (white on my quilt), i just sewed strips on to it using my walking foot. I didn't have a problem with stretching (that I notice), i'm no perfectionist. I made sure that the strips were long enough and wide enough so i could trim them up without a problem. i used a sheet of paper as a guide when i was trimming up the triangle. (does that even make sense??)

  35. WOW!! I LOVE this quilt! I'm going to have to make one too. Although I don't have that many scraps, so I'll be ordering a couple of honey buns so I can make one. I love the binding. I love everything about it. I have a 4 week old here and I think a spider quilt would be a good project for me to slowly work on. I think I'll be able to feel like I'm accomplishing something even if I'm working at a snail's pace.
