granny square

I first saw this quilt here, and LOVED it.  Some quilts I like and some I love and this one I really, really loved.  I had to make one too.

I made a few blocks and got pretty frustrated.  I don't know if I have terrible piecing skills or what, but I couldn't get the edges to work.  (I should've taken a picture, but I'll try to explain it, and my solution). I basically didn't have enough fabric to trim the block decently.  When I trimmed, I was cutting into the point of my square.  It bugged me so bad, I put it away for a long time.

But after seeing so many really cool quilts, I pulled it back out and came up with a solution.  It does cause extra waste, but I don't care, it was worth it to make it work.  The colorful squares are all 2.5in squares, but the white/low volume squares I cut to 2.5x3inches.  This gave me enough room to trim without messing with the block.  Once I figured that out, I became a granny square quilt block making machine.  They are fun.

  1. There is something about granny squares that you can't help but jump in. I never got past making four of them though, so I just made a mini for my wall. I really love how you used LV prints for your background. Beautiful quilt!

  4. Beautiful quilt! I have used your method to make sure I don't lose points many times! works like a charm. Really like the scrappy sashing you used. Very nice!

  5. That is so pretty! Love it! I've just finished making one with the strip piecing method, only downside that it's not all scrappy and colourful.

  6. I also love this quilt design. I didn't realise there would be a problem with the cutting. I hate wasting fabric. I think, if I ever get wound to making one of these, I will do it like the Kaffe Fassett quilts where he lays the entire thing out and then joins it up starting from the corner and joining strips diagonally. Painful but no cutting the triangles off.

  7. It looks really lovely! Thanks for taking the time to explain about the problem with cutting off points because this is on my to-make list and now I know what to look out for.

  8. Love that you used patterned fabrics instead of a plain white background x

  9. Yep, that's how I did my white block edges too!

  10. Your quilt is wonderful! I love how you used the low volume prints for lattice ... I may have to make another one! Bring on the waste! Especially when your end result is so splendid!

  17. Your quilt is great!! I love your decision to use the light fabrics with prints around your granny squares. This quilt looks really fabulous!

I made some pillows for my mom and I have to say: they are really boring. I definitely have to check my fabric stash and make some full of colors granny squares too :) Thank you so much for great inspiration!

    Have a wonderful weekend, Jolana

  19. I did mine that same way. It is so much easier to get it all squared up. Love yours.

  20. I love your solution - it bothered me too, but from a different angle - I don't mind the waste as much as I mind mangling the points! After paper piecing for many years I've become hardened to the waster! I think of fabric as paint - my creative medium.
    Your quilt is gorgeous.

  21. I had the same problem as you and that was my solution also.
The waste didn't bother me too much it was just the white background fabric which is a bit cheaper and easily replaceable.
